WC under severe thunderstorm watch this afternoon

WEST CARLETON – Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for West Carleton and the surrounding area.

“At 4:25 p.m., Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain,” the weather prognosticators released in a statement today (June 26).

This cluster of severe thunderstorms is located near Ottawa, moving north at 25 kilometres per hour.

Environment Canada wards 90 km/h wind gusts and nickel size hail are possible in the Ottawa, Kanata, Nepean, Gloucester, Orléans, Metcalfe and Russell area.

“Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads,” Environment Canada said. “Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.”

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
