‘We’re still in love’

KINBURN – While the majority of media looks for stories of young love on Valentine’s Day, West Carleton Online has been around long enough to know true love lasts the test of time.
Carp’s Lorna and Peter Jowett have been married for 69 years “and we’re still in love.”

West Carleton Online found the Jowetts at the West Carleton Seniors Council Valentine’s Day luncheon held in Kinburn on Feb. 14, dancing to the music of the band The Classics after a lunch catered by Almonte’s Leatherworks.
The Jowetts moved to Carp eight years ago to be closer to their kids who call Kanata home after 40 years in Brampton, ON where they square danced for nearly as long.
“We danced a lot,” Lorna said.
And played a lot of bridge. But according to the Jowetts, the secret to a long-lasting love starts in the home.
“I just do as I’m told at home,” Peter, who turns 90 next week, said.
“I’m a good cook,” Lorna said.
The luncheon, celebrating its third year, was a big hit. West Carleton Seniors Council President Judith Waddell says 137 people registered for the event.
“A good turnout,” Waddell said. “I’m really amazed. I’m glad to see everyone wore red today. They look really good.”
This was the third Valentine’s Day luncheon for the council. The event replaced the Winter Wonderland Dance which ended when COVID-19 started. Waddell started the event with a fitting joke.
“What can you touch but not feel?” she asked the crowd. “Someone’s heart. Especially on Valentine’s Day.”
