Ottawa hits 16 straight days of double-digit COVID-19 numbers

OTTAWA – While the provincial numbers continue to slowly drop, Ottawa maintains its standings as a COVID-19 hotspot.

According to Sunday’s (Aug. 2) report, Ontario has recorded 116 new cases, down from the 124 that was reported the day before – a 6.5 per cent decrease difference. Seventeen of those new cases are located in Ottawa, matching Saturday’s 17 reported cases. 

This is the third day in a row that the province has reported more than 100 new cases, however, it is the 16th day Ottawa has reported a double digit increase.

The Ontario government also says 122 cases have been resolved since Saturday —more than 89 per cent of cases across the province have been resolved since the pandemic started. 

Ontario’s total case count since the beginning of the pandemic is 39,449.

In the past week, the province recorded 790 new cases. That’s down from the previous week where the government reported 1,269 new cases from July 18 to 25. That means the number of new cases reported dropped almost 38 per cent in a week’s time. 

There has been one new death in the province, bringing the total death toll to 2,778. Ottawa has no new deaths and remains at a total of 264 since the pandemic began.

Seventy-two people are hospitalized, with 26 in intensive care— 14 of which are on a ventilator across Ontario. 

In Ottawa, there are 12 people hospitalized, four of which are in the intensive care unit.

The number of active cases in the city is reportedly 250 with the number of resolved cases sitting at 2,058. More than 80 per cent of cases have been resolved. 

In the province, the most cases in total reported by a cohort are those between 20-39 with 12,075 cases recorded, followed by those between 40-59 with 11,873 cases.

The 19 and under age group has 2,275 confirmed cases.

Ottawa still has the most cases reported in 20-29 year olds with 398 in total; this is followed by the 50-59 age group with 344 total cases and 40-49 year olds with 333 cases.

Ontario completed 30,443 tests since Saturday – 3,049 less than what was processed Saturday. The total number of processed tests is now at 2,235,697. 

The government says 17,839 cases are currently under investigation.

There are also 13 ongoing outbreaks in healthcare and childcare establishment in the city.
