The Councillor's Column

Ottawa Public Health News
COVID-19 Update

Image

COVID levels in Ottawa remain high. While our wastewater and percentage positivity levels seem to be slowly decreasing, they remain high (and could climb again if we let down our guard).

The councillor column header. With the welcome arrival of warmer weather, catching up with friends and family outdoors is a great way to stay connected and improve your mental health, while also reducing the risk of spreading COVID (versus gathering indoors).

More info about lowering risk: http://OttawaPublicHealth.ca/RiskReduction

You can also lower your risk by staying up to date on your COVID vaccinations. Even if you’ve had COVID, booster doses strengthen our protection, which benefits everyone.

Drop-in to any of OPH’s Community Clinics and get vaccinated with the dose you’re eligible for. http://OttawaPublicHealth.ca/COVID19Vaccine

OPH still strongly recommends that you wear a mask when in public and/or crowded indoor settings. It’ll lower the risks to those around you.

So, in short: this wave isn’t over, gather outdoors if you can, get boosted and wear masks. And stay home when sick.

Your Councillor in the Community

Huntley Community Association AGM

My thanks to the Huntley Community Association for inviting me to speak during their virtual annual general meeting the evening of May 5. Congratulations to the returning directors. My sincere thanks to outgoing President Judy Makin for her commitment to the Carp community. Doug Rothwell recently retired from the board and I thank him for his service to the community.

Fitzroy Harbour AGM

I was pleased to attend the Fitzroy Harbour Community Association’s in-person annual general meeting the evening of May 5 at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre. Congratulations to the new and returning directors. While I was in Fitzroy Harbour, I was also happy to see people playing softball at the nearby diamonds and children playing at the park. Such a wonderful sight to see.

Thank You Everyone

Thank you to everyone who made my 65th birthday celebration on April 30 at the Huntley Mess Hall so special. I was also very humbled and happy that West Carleton volunteer firefighters took a break from their nearby training to surprise me by serenading me. Thank you to District 6 Rural Sector Chief Bill Bell and Chris Burke for thinking of me. Thanks also to everyone who shared their best wishes.

Deer Population

My office has received calls regarding the high presence of deer in neighbourhoods. To reduce deer vs. vehicle encounters, it is recommended that residents do not feed the deer. By feeding the deer, there is an increased chance of a collision on our rural roads as well as attracting their natural predators to the area. Deer are used to foraging for food and do not need to be fed by humans. For more information on preventing and resolving human/wildlife conflicts, please refer to the City of Ottawa’s Wildlife Strategy.

Watch for turtles crossing our roads

May to October is an active season for turtles, including here in West Carleton-March where there are abundant wetlands. Turtles seek out nesting sites and often lay eggs in the gravel and sand along the sides of our roads. They sometimes cross roadways to reach a nesting spot.

Please be on the lookout for these amazing creatures. Consider helping them safely cross (in the direction they are headed) if it is safe for you to do so. Avoid pushing the turtle with your foot as this may damage their shell, and be mindful of fingers and toes when assisting snapping turtles!

Victoria Day and Canada Day Fireworks

In keeping with the City of Ottawa’s Fireworks By-law, individuals can only discharge their fireworks on Victoria Day and Canada Day and the day before and after those days. Individuals cannot use commercial-grade fireworks.

If you are planning to let off fireworks for Victoria Day, please let your neighbours with horses and other livestock know your plans in advance so that these animals can be safely sheltered. Fireworks can seriously startle livestock and pets, leading to serious injury. For details, please click here.

Gateway Speed Zone – Constance Bay

My office has received complaints regarding speeding along Bishop Davis Drive in Constance Bay. Speed zone signs were removed throughout Constance Bay to create a Gateway Zone for the community in late 2020. As part of this road designation program, which is being implemented in wards across Ottawa, 40 km/h signs are placed at the entrance and exits of residential areas where speed limits are less than 50 km/h. In Constance Bay, Gateway 40 km/h entrance and exit signs were installed on Constance Bay Road at Monty Drive and at Willand Lane. Ottawa Police enforce accordingly. Please slow down and be mindful of others, including cyclists and pedestrians.

City of Ottawa Freshet Taskforce – Conditions as of May 6

No significant flooding is anticipated at this time along the Ottawa River. Water levels and flows on the Ottawa River are decreasing in all locations and are expected to continue declining over the next few days. City crews will continue to monitor areas for response as required.
