City recommends tornado victims contact insurers first

Special to WC Online

WEST CARLETON – Ottawa is recommending tornado victims contact their insurers first, as the long road to recovery begins.

If your home was affected by Friday’s tornado, the first thing you should do is contact your insurance company. Most home and business insurance policies cover damage caused by a windstorm or tornado. If you are a renter, contact the property owner and your renters’ insurance company.

Your insurance company will give you direction on your next steps and assist with clean up and debris removal. Please do not bring garbage to the curb.

Protect yourself and coordinate everything through your insurance company. Document and take photos of any damage. Keep all receipts related to the storm, such as for hotels, food, pet boarding and supplies.

The City of Ottawa will make sure roads are safe for residents and accessible for emergency responders. The City will prioritize areas over the coming days to clear debris, including trees and branches, from roads, access points, fire hydrants and the City’s right of way, including roadside ditches and culverts.
