WOCRC warming up for Coldest Night of Year Feb. 28
By Nonie Smart - West Carleton Online
KANATA – In just a few weeks, communities across Canada will participate in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walk to support local charities that serve people experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness.
This year, the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (WOCRC) invites walkers to join them Feb. 28 at the John G. Mlacak Community Centre (2500 Campeau Dr.) for their 2026 CNOY fundraiser.
The event begins at 4 p.m. with registration followed by the walk which starts at 5 p.m. Participants may choose between a two or five-kilometre route, both of which wind through the Beaverbrook area of Kanata North. A light meal will be available after walkers return to the community centre.
There is still time to sign up to walk or to donate to the event. Currently there are 22 teams registered, including West Carleton’s Tillie’s Troopers as well as a contingent from West Carleton Secondary School (WCSS). Last year the WOCRC exceeded their goal and raised just more than $45,000. This year they hope to raise $75,000 which will be used to support a variety of outreach programs in far west Ottawa but in order to do so, they need your help.
To donate or register for the event see the Ottawa-Kanata portal of the CNOY website.
