U23 national fastpitch championship cancels tonight’s trivia event

Special to WC Online

CARP – In a sign that despite the easing of provincial restrictions, the COVID-19 pandemic is not done with us yet.

The organizing committee has cancelled tonight’s (April 1) scheduled Trivia Night fundraiser. The reason being COVID-19 has reared its ugly head amongst those close to the event.

“Sorry folks, this is not an April Fool’s prank,” the committee released in a statement today (April 1). “We’ve had four teams withdraw already today due to COVID, so out of an abundance of caution we’re cancelling the event.”

Certainly a blow, it’s just another COVID challenge the organizing committee has faced in trying to bring the Softball Canada Men’s U23 Canadian Fast Pitch Championship to Carp.

The event was originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, but like all public gatherings that year, was postponed due to the pandemic. The same goes for 2021. The organizing committee was able to secure the event for Aug. 2 to 7 this summer and recently continued planning.

West Carleton Online spoke to committee chair Shawn Williams roughly two weeks ago to get an update on the event.

The committee is planning on going ahead with Alumni Night on Friday, April 29 at the Carp Agricultural Hall.
