Tomas joins WC Online on school beat
By Lilly Tomas - West Carleton Online
DUNROBIN – Hi! I am Lilly Tomas; I am a new writer at West Carleton Online.
I am a Grade 11 co-op student at West Carleton Secondary School (WCSS). I took this co-op program because I would like to be a journalist, and this is a fantastic opportunity for me to get a better understanding of what it means to be in this field.
My goal for the future is to go to Carleton University and study journalism there, then I will work my way to writing sports journalism at the New York Times as well as travelling around the world following the world juniors.
I would like to work in New York because my favourite sports team is the New York Rangers and writing articles at their games in Madison Square Garden would be a dream.
My focus for articles right now will be West Carleton Secondary School (WCSS), especially the athletic teams known collectively as the WCSS Wolves, players and events and how they do over the course of the season.
This winter, I will be playing hockey for the Kanata Rangers. I play left wing. I have been playing hockey for the last three years, always with the Kanata Rangers organization.
I also play Rugby 7s and 15s, for the West Carleton Secondary School Wolves. I play 7s in the fall, sevens is a shorter season but much tougher games. Rugby 15s happens during the spring with a longer more spread out season.
I have always loved sports, and everything to do with sports. So, when I realized you could watch sports for a living and talk about them without peopled getting annoyed, I thought it was for me. Now I will get to write about it. Or I get to meet my favorite players and watch my favourite team. When I knew that was part of the job, I knew I wanted to be a journalist.
