Hooked on Kinburn Christmas market

KINBURN – It’s the unofficial start to the Christmas shopping season, and if the 42nd annual Kinburn Craft and Gift Fair can be used as a barometer, it’s going to be a busy season.
Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was the variety of the more than 40 vendors on site, but Kinburn’s annual Christmas craft sale was another hit, busy early in the morning and steady all day long with West Carleton residents and beyond looking to get an early start on their Christmas shopping.
“Busy, busy, busy,” long-time organizer Jayne Coady told West Carleton Online Saturday, Nov. 9 from the Kinburn Community Centre hall. “We’ve had a steady flow since 9 a.m. there’s so many great vendors here and of course we have the best perogies around.”
Coady wanted to celebrate some of the local young vendors on hand (but fear not, knitter-extraordinaire Pat Vaillancourt continued her perfect attendance record – we interviewed her at Kinburn Christmas craft sale Number 39), which included two vendors under 14.
This year West Carleton Online spoke with Owen Dods, a 16-year-old Carp resident who brought his Hooked on You Earrings business with him to the Kinburn craft sale. Owen makes earrings and jewelry out of fishing lures and other angling equipment.
Owen had his booth set up with the help of his mother Lindsay Dods and younger brother Sawyer, 11.
“I started about three years ago, making earrings out of old fishing lures, and it turned in to an awesome little business,” Owen told West Carleton Online from the craft sale.
And his younger brother Sawyer now has a product too.
“He makes all the keychains and there are about five or six different colours available,” Owen said.
Working as a vendor is Owen’s primary way of getting his product out there.
“We usually do about two or three shows a year,” Owen said. “This is our first time here in Kinburn. We usually do a bunch of Fitzroy Harbour shows and Carp shows.”
