Create the song of summer at Gambit’s summer camp

CARP – Spend your summer in Carp listening to the sounds of music, and making them too.
Gambit Music Academy is hosting its summer camps, this year offering two weekly sessions in July.
Gambit Summer Camps will run from July 15 to July 19 and July 22 to July 26 and each week is filled with fun and activities tied to a core of music exploration.
Different activities are planned every day of the week wrapped around a ukelele building project, daily music instruction and a week end talent show.
“We are looking forward to our July summer camps this year,” Gambit’s Jennifer Johnson told West Carleton Online yesterday (June 24). “Last year we had an absolute blast and it was so great to see the creativity and imagination that happened. We made our own real, playable ukuleles the kids painted and helped put together and some of them were really impressive in the end.
The campers enjoyed the summer weather as well.
“We had the chance to visit some amazing local businesses in Carp that taught us all kinds of non-musical things as well,” Johnson said. “We went to Makatew Workshops for an educational workshop to teach us about indigenous customs, cultural appropriation and appreciation and then made our own medicine bags. This year we are also adding a trip to the Diefenbunker. Visits to the splash pad to cool down were so much fun, and of course, we can’t forget the Carp Custom Creamery is just down the street.”
There will still be lots of time for music.
“At the studio the kids learn about all the instruments we have, about songwriting and collaborating, basic musical concepts and ideas to set the framework for future music study if they go down that path in the future,” Johnson said. “They learn fundamental chords to play on their ukuleles that they’ll take home. For the kids that have some experience already, we can build on those skills and help teach them to play with others. We are really looking forward to another great year of summer fun.”
