CONSTANCE BAY – The West Carleton Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 616, continues its tradition of hosting West Carleton’s first Remembrance Day Service, and that tradition is always on the first Saturday before Nov. 11.
“All are welcome to attend our Remembrance ceremony and parade, which is held by our Legion Branch 616 in Constance Bay on Saturday, Nov. 9,” Branch 616 volunteers released in a statement today (Nov. 4). “On the Saturday before the actual Remembrance Day, as is done across our country, we will honour those who served and sacrificed their lives. All veterans are welcome to march in the parade and youth members of the Scouts and Girl Guides.”
The parade leaves the Constance Bay Grocery at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9.
“The parade route will be from the Constance Bay Grocery to the Legion at 377 Allbirch,” the branch said. “The ceremony is held at the branch cenotaph, and we are open following the ceremony, including a complimentary lunch.”
Allbirch will be closed to traffic during the parade which lasts less than a half hour. Branch 616 started its tradition of hosting a Remembrance Day service the Saturday before Nov. 11 so its members could attend the national service in Ottawa on Nov. 11. It also allowed the Branch 616 Colour Guard attend other Ottawa Valley services on the day of and provide flag service at other ceremonies.
“Please note road closures are in effect at 1:30 p.m. during the parade on Constance Bay Road from McConnell Lane to Allbirch Road and on Allbirch Road to the Legion until the ceremony ends at approximately 2:30 p.m. Alternate routes are available, and emergencies excepted. We will remember them.”
