Police board, OPS conduct research on services
OTTAWA – The Ottawa Police Services Board (OPSB) and the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) are seeking public input on policing services through a variety of methods this summer. Specifically, they will solicit residents’ perceptions on safety, crime and disorder, community priorities, and police performance.
“Throughout the month of July, a random sampling of more than 17,000 Ottawa households will be invited by mail to complete the 2018 research survey online,” said Chief Charles Bordeleau.
The OPSB values the views of all Ottawa residents and welcomes those who do not receive an invitation by mail to participate in the survey to provide input in a survey posted on the OPS website<https://www.
“The Public Opinion Research survey will ask residents for their opinions on the level of crime in their neighbourhoods, and their concerns and feedback on services provided by the OPS,” added Chief Bordeleau. “The results of the research will help to improve the quality of service and ensure the needs of Ottawa residents are addressed.”
They will also be requesting input from the public via postings on OPS and OPSB social media accounts. Residents will have many ways and opportunities to provide their input. Please do so no later than July 31.
The research information gathered in July will assist the OPSB and OPS in identifying public concerns and priorities for the upcoming 2019-2021 Business Plan.
Results from the last public opinion survey conducted in 2015 can be found on the OPS website<https://www.
I tried to log into the survey on the OPS website seeking input from residents on police services but it’s been removed. So I didn’t get to tell them about my growing concerns.
I no longer feel as safe living in West Carleton as I once did, especially since the last remaining police officer stationed in West Carleton was removed and the Community Police Office closed. Even the volunteer group that worked with the community police officer has been disbanded. We no longer get police reports relating specifically to crimes in West Carleton. Neighbours have been talking about two thefts that occurred recently, an older model refurbished car and a motorcycle have been taken from two locations right on Dunrobin Road, but I have heard nothing official. I have also been watching for news concerning the car fire on Carp Road earlier in the summer. Was there a body found inside?
I no longer believe the old saying, “No news is good news.” We need to know what is happening in our community. Most people are unaware of how quickly changes are occurring and how many essential services we have lost over the last decade: our public health nurses, our police, and our ambulances. Sure they will come from the city but we don’t have them in West Carleton any more.
