Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received a 911 call at 12:15 p.m. reporting the fire.

“Initial reports were that black smoke was coming from the roof of the house,” OFS public information officer Nicholas DeFazio released in a statement today (Oct. 22).

The structure was a single-family home and eyewitnesses familiar with the residence say no one was home at the time and everyone is safe. Volunteer firefighters from nearby OFS Station 63 in Constance Bay were first on scene.

“Upon arrival, it was confirmed that flames were coming from the home,” DeFazio said. “A ‘working fire’ was declared at 12:24 p.m. to dispatch additional resources to the scene. Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line inside the structure.”

There are no fire hydrants in Constance Bay, so firefighters had to transport water from away.

“The fire was in an area of the city with no hydrants,” DeFazio said. “Firefighters used a water shuttle system to bring water to the scene from a water source.”

The fire was declared under control at: 1:46 p.m. An OFS fire investigator was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
