Two Jens combine for Carp drive-in movie

CARP – Two of West Carleton’s most community minded Jens are combining forces to bring the drive-in movie experience to Carp, for free.

That’s right. Free. From the popcorn, to the cotton candy, to the double-feature, the whole night is free. And it’s happening Wednesday, Aug. 28, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Carp Fairgrounds (3790 Carp Rd.).

In a time before COVID-19, the Carp Drive-In was an annual event, in the community, but has not been seen since 2018.

Despite its popularity, it just didn’t fit in to the Huntley Community Association’s budget anymore. This summer, Carp’s Jennifer Stewart and Carp’s Jennifer McAndrew have combined forces to bring the drive-in experience back, and this time it’s all free. Both Jens are longtime community volunteers. Stewart was the long-serving chair of the Village of Carp Business Improvement Area and still sits on the board, to name one of her many volunteer positions within the community. McAndrew volunteers with many local organizations including sitting on the board of the West Carleton Minor Hockey Association (WCMHA) as well as running as the Kanata-Carleton Conservative candidate in the 2021 federal election.

“We wanted to create an event that would bring the village together in a meaningful way,” Stewart told West Carleton Online today (Aug. 24). “The drive-in experience is about more than just a movie; it’s about celebrating the strong sense of community we have here in Carp. As we approach the busy school year, this is a moment for families to enjoy a special evening together, surrounded by friends and neighbours.”

It was important for the organizers to make the event accessible, and thanks to title sponsor Evolugen, the event is free to all.

“The event is free of charge, making it accessible to everyone in the village, regardless of age or financial situation,” Stewart said. “This inclusivity is a core value for us and something we wanted to emphasize with this event.”

As the summer winds down and the school year approaches, this event serves as a perfect way for families to enjoy one last summer evening together in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

“This event is a celebration of Carp’s spirit and resilience,” co-organizer McAndrew said. “By hosting a free drive-in, we’re ensuring everyone can participate, enjoy, and feel a part of something special. It’s our way of giving back to a community that continuously supports and uplifts one another.”

The gates to the fairgrounds will open at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening being a chance for the community to gather and say hello before the first movie, this year’s Garfield, starts at 8:10 p.m. There will be a 20 minute break before the second movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire begins at 10:10 p.m.

“Hosting the event in Carp underscores our commitment to celebrating and supporting our local community,” McAndrew said. “It’s a way to give back and show appreciation for the residents who make Carp a wonderful place to live.”
