Seedy Saturday starts your garden March 14
CARP – Nothing says spring like Seedy Saturday.
While weather reports more than three days out are for entertainment purposes only, temperatures are looking downright springy (if not summery) by the end of this week, in to next week.
And on Saturday, March 14, the fourth annual Seedy Saturday hosted by the West Carleton Garden Club and Horticultural Society (WCGC) along with the Kanata-March and Stitsville Goulbourn garden clubs arrives at the Carp Agricultural Hall (3790 Carp Rd.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Planning your spring gardens?” WCGC volunteers released in a statement. “Come visit the Seedy Saturday event hosted by the Kanata-March, Stittsville-Goulbourn and West Carleton Garden Clubs and Horticultural Societies.”
Visitors to this event will find economically priced seeds from local sources for sale at tables hosted by the horticultural societies (cash sales only); commercial vendors and workshops; a Seed Swap; a Kiddie Corner; an advice booth hosted by the Master Gardeners of Ottawa-Carleton; plus coffee and refreshments.
“Cost of admission is $2 (cash only), which includes three tickets for door prizes offered by our vendors.,” the WCGC said. “Kids are welcome, free of charge.”
Proceeds from the entrance fee sales will be donated to support the Kanata, Stittsville and West Carleton Food banks.
West Carleton Online was at last year’s Seedy Saturday and spoke to WCGC President Brenda Baird at the event.
“The crowd was steady, evenly spaced out which meant guests could have more room to check out all the vendors, ask questions and shop,” Baird said. “Many people commented on this. They didn’t feel rushed; it was a more relaxing environment. The crowd was steady, evenly spaced out which meant guests could have more room to check out all the vendors, ask questions and shop. Many people commented on this. They didn’t feel rushed; it was a more relaxing environment. The most popular attraction was the Kids Corner. This is totally taken care of by our WCGC members. Children of all ages, even adults this year enjoyed filling their pots with soil; choosing three different flower seeds to plant; learning what to do at home to care for them; and hopefully be able to plant them outside in their gardens when the time comes. One little three-year-old girl was so excited to do this again this year. Last year, she attended when she was two, planted a Mexican Sunflower and it grew. They planted it outside in their garden and she loved telling everyone who came to visit that that was her flower.”
