WCAS’ Beattie offering in-person classes in New Year
By Jake Davies - West Carleton Online
HUNTLEY – Long-time West Carleton Art Society (WCAS) member and painter Brenda Beattie will be offering in-person art classes starting in the New Year.
Beattie will be hosting drawing, watercolour and acrylic painting classes starting in January in West Carleton at the Trinity Presbyterian Church (1817 Richardson Side Rd.).
The watercolours will give raw rookies a core group of skills to work with the paint as well as put it to canvas.
“Watercolours for the absolute beginner,” Beattie said. “You will learn all about colour, colour mixing, washes and many watercolour techniques that will be put to use in your first watercolour paintings.”
Each student is responsible for their own supplies and a supply list will be emailed to you when you register.
The watercolour course is six sessions from Jan. 18 to Feb. 22, Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and costs $200.
Beattie will also be offering a Drawing and More six-class program.
“There will be four classes in pencil drawing using the gesture, contour and blind contour techniques,” Beattie said. “Learn the basics of light and shadow. I rely heavily on the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards whose drawing exercises will teach anyone to draw well. We will then go onto drawing with pen and ink (one class) and using an ink wash lastly, we will create paintings using watercolour and ink (one class).”
That workshop is also $200 and will be held Tuesdays Jan. 14 to Feb. 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
This past summer, Beattie led a plein air painting session in Carp at Hidden Lake and West Carleton Online was there.
Beattie has organized plein air group painting sessions for years.
“Everyone is pretty focused on what they’re doing,” Beattie told West Carleton Online Tuesday (June 18) a few days after the morning event. “And that’s what it’s like. That’s why I started a group, so I wouldn’t be alone. Places like Blakeney are beautiful but can be a little creepy. Sometimes at lunch we can have a critique, but it’s very solitary.”
