Police briefs: Impaired Hwy. 416 rollover, Renfrew porch pirate caught, More crashes

BELLS CORNERS – Members of the Ottawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid Impaired Driving related charges against an individual from Prescott after they rolled their vehicle on Highway 416.
“Shortly before 1 a.m. on July 27, OPP responded to reports of a vehicle that had rolled over on Highway 416 near Hunt Club Road,” OPP media relations officer Const. Michael Fathi released in a statement today (July 28). “Officers suspected the driver had been consuming alcohol. A roadside screening device was utilized, and the driver was brought back to detachment for a breath test. The driver registered more then twice the legal limit.”
As a result, Andrew Boschetti, 37, faces the following charges:
- Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Dangerous operation
The accused had his licence suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He is set to appear in an Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa at a later date.
Long Sault drowning under investigation
LONG SAULT – Members of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Detachment of the OPP are investigating a drowning incident in the community of Long Sault in the Township of South Stormont.
“On Saturday, July 26, at approximately 5:45 p.m., emergency services responded to a call reporting a young child at Mille Roches Beach had no vital signs, and off-duty medical professionals were conducting resuscitation efforts,” the OPP released in a statement yesterday (July 27). “As resuscitation efforts continued, Cornwall area paramedics rushed the child to hospital under OPP escort with assistance from the Cornwall Police Service. Despite the resuscitation efforts, the child was later pronounced deceased.”
The identity of the three-year-old victim is not being released, out of respect for the family’s privacy.

Riverside South cyclist killed in collision
RIVERSIDE SOUTH – The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) Fatal Collision Investigations Unit is seeking witnesses or footage of a collision that occurred on Saturday, July 26.
“At approximately 12:30 p.m. on July 26, emergency crews responded to a collision on Mitch Owens Road between Spratt Road and Limebank Road involving a motor vehicle and a cyclist,” the OPS released in a statement Saturday (July 26). “The cyclist, a woman in her 70s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The investigation is ongoing. Investigators would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam or surveillance footage of this incident, but has not yet spoken to police.

Richmond crash ends in impaired charges
RICHMOND – The OPS Fatal Collision Investigations Unit is seeking witnesses or footage of a collision that occurred on Friday, July 25.
“At approximately 3:40 p.m., emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle rollover on Garvin Road near Richmond,” the OPS released in a statement Saturday (July 26). “A pick-up truck had left the roadway with two occupants inside. Tragically, the passenger, a woman in her 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, a man in his 20s, sustained minor injuries.”
Brandon LaPlante, 25, has been charged with impaired operation cause death and dangerous driving cause death.
The investigation is ongoing.

Driver struck after exiting vehicle near Barrhaven
BARRHAVEN – At approximately 4:30 a.m. on July 26, the OPS responded to a single-vehicle accident on Fallowfield Road east of Woodroffe Avenue.
“The driver was alone in the vehicle,” the OPS released in a statement Saturday (July 26). “After exiting the vehicle, they were struck by another vehicle that left the scene westbound towards Woodroffe Avenue. The driver is in hospital with serious injuries.”

Motorcyclist killed in Lanark Highlands
LANARK HIGHLANDS – The Lanark County Detachment of the OPP is investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle in Lanark Highlands.
“At approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, officers responded to a report of a collision on Pine Grove Road, between Concession Road 8A and Giles Road,” OPP media relations officer Const. Brianna Babin released in a statement Friday (July 25). “Upon arrival, officers identified a motorcycle and its lone rider, a 66-year-old male from Carleton Place. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency responders, the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Man charged after fleeing crash
INDUSTRIAL PARK – The OPS Fatal Collision Investigations Unit has laid multiple charges in connection with a serious collision that occurred on July 3.
“At the time of the incident, a vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 417,” the OPS released in a statement Friday (July 25). “Shortly afterward, the suspect vehicle collided with another vehicle in the area of Star Top Road. Both the driver and a passenger, a woman in her 20s, were transported to hospital by paramedics with serious injuries.”
As a result of the investigation, the driver, 35-year-old Guy Lavergne of Ottawa has been charged with the following offences:
- Impaired Operation Causing Bodily Harm
- Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm
- Flight from Peace Officer
- Operation While Prohibited – five counts
The investigation is ongoing.
Open air fire ban in effect
OTTAWA – Another heat wave means another open air fire ban for Ottawa.
“Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) has placed a burn ban into effect for the City of Ottawa,” OFS public information officer Nicholas DeFazio released in astatement Friday (July 25). “All open air fires are prohibited during a ban, including properties that have an Open Air Fire Permit. This ban applies to agricultural burns, brush pile burns, as well as campfires. There will be zero tolerance enforcement during the fire ban as per the Open Air Fire Bylaw.”

Renfrew porch pirate caught
RENFREW – The Renfrew Detachment of the OPP and the East Region Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) have charged one person after receiving reports of a theft on Queen Street in the Town of Renfrew.
“On Friday, July 18, Renfrew OPP responded to a theft of a delivered package,” OPP media relations officer Const. Brianna Babin released in a statement July 24. “Police obtained surveillance video and were able to identify a suspect.”
As a result of the investigation, Hunter Green, 35 of Renfrew, was charged with theft under $5,000.
The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke Court on Sept. 10.
The stolen property was returned to the rightful owner.
