Carp corridor reaping benefit of strong construction sector

CARP – The 2020 Sector Spotlight Construction provincial and municipal report shows a strong industry which has been a benefit to the Carp Road Corridor Business Improvement Area (CRCBIA) the executive director says.
Ottawa’s construction industry was responsible for the eighth most jobs in 2019, with 32,847 employed in the area.
“There are over 7,000 companies who identify themselves in the construction sector and a good number of those are in the Carp Road Corridor,” CRCBIA executive director Roddy Bolivar released in a statement today (Aug. 27). “
Bolivar says while the industry is growing, but that hasn’t exactly meant more new jobs in the Carp corridor.
“The industry as a whole has seen a nine per cent growth in number of jobs though that might be held back as companies in the corridor are having some difficulty finding employees,” he said.
As the representative of more than 300 businesses in the CRCBIA, Bolivar says he is working with organizations that may be able to help bring more workers to the Carp corridor.
“The business association meets regularly with Ottawa’s employment planning council, the west Ottawa employment resource centre, Algonquin College and other organizations to both bring attention to the available jobs in the corridor and bring the area to the attention of job seekers,” he said.
The sector report ranked the construction industry sixth in five-year job gains (2,581 – increase in number over last five years); seventh in annual salary ($63,845); fourth in business county (7,258); and fifth in employer count (2,763 businesses with at least one employee).
