West Capital Power, who recently (Aug. 15) proposed a relatively small, 20-megawatt solar power generation project, and hosted a well received public meeting on Sept. 4, are now proposing a 20 MW BESS project also for the Carp Airport area.

West Capital Power will host a public information session Wednesday, Nov. 19 to share details and discuss the project.

“West Capital Power invites you to a virtual information session about a proposed 20 MW Energy Storage System at Carp Airport (1500 Thomas Argue Dr.),” West Capital Power staff released in a statement yesterday (Oct. 30). “The project will provide clean, reliable energy to support regional energy needs while ensuring safety and minimal community impact.”

Proponents say the project uses safe, non-flammable, zinc- and water-based technology that avoids the fire risks sometimes associated with other battery systems.

“As a result, this project will not increase fire risk for the community,” West Capital Power said. “It is being proposed under Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) Long Term 2 Capacity RFP, with an aim to enhance local and provincial grid reliability, to help meet growing electricity demand and support renewable energy integration. This is an opportunity to learn about the proposal, ask questions, and share feedback.”

The BESS is expected to Connect to the South March Transformer Station (per Hydro One assessment), and the project live is expected to be approximately 25 years, with decommissioning or refurbishment at end of term.

The meeting will cover:

  • Overview of the proposed project
  • How it would operate and its timelines
  • System technology, safety, and fire protection
  • How to provide feedback

The meeting will be held virtually Nov. 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and you can register by visiting  https://westcapitalpower.ca/capacity/community-engagement/ or submit a question in advance.
