CORKERY – A yard sale in Corkery Saturday (Aug. 6) will raise funds for the environmental group Friends of the Burnt Lands Alvar (FBLA) in their fight to prevent the expansion of the Corkery quarry.
The group formed in response to the news Thomas Cavanagh Construction Ltd. Was applying for a zoning bylaw amendment to expand their quarry at 4200 March Rd. by more than 18 hectares.
The FBLA are concerned this will adversely affect the Burnt Lands Provincial Park alvar and brought their concerns to Kanata-Carleton MP Jenna Sudds’ Rural Roundtable last April.
“We think this proposal is unfortunate,” Corkery resident John Blais told Sudds at the event.
Tomorrow the FBLA will start fundraising for their fight.
“A giant yard sale will be held on Saturday to support preserving the Burnt Lands Alvar from encroaching development,” the FBLA released in a statement. “It’s designated by the Province of Ontario as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest. It’s up to all of us to oppose unfettered development of irreplaceable natural areas for the sake of profit.”
The yard sale will run Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1616 Burnt Lands Rd.
