Spotlight Youth Collective focuses on development through theatre

WEST CARLETON – A new non-profit organization focusing on west Ottawa youth, is looking to provide opportunities for development through the arts. And Spotlight Youth Collective is already working on its first production.

“I’m reaching out on behalf of Spotlight Youth Collective, a new and vibrant non-profit initiative rooted in our shared commitment to community and youth development,” SYC volunteer coordinator Jen McAndrew told West Carleton Online yesterday (July 29). “Our mission is to empower young people through inclusive, non-competitive opportunities in the performing arts, helping them grow in confidence, creativity and connection.”

McAndrew is a Carp area resident who is no stranger to the community. McAndrew is a community volunteer and leader, donating her time to minor hockey, the West Carleton School of Performing Arts and several other area organizations. She also represented the Conservative Party in Kanata-Carleton Riding for the 2021 federal election. SYC is a new venture for McAndrew.

“At Spotlight Youth Collective, we believe that theatre is more than entertainment,” she said. “it’s a powerful tool for building community, fostering self-expression, and nurturing future leaders. Whether performing on stage or working behind the scenes, every young person deserves a safe and inspiring space to explore their creative potential.”

The SYC’s first big project will be a musical production.

“This fall, we’re thrilled to be launching our very first production: Elf Jr. the Musical, scheduled for the end of November,” McAndrew said. “This project will bring together youth from across our community to collaborate, create, and shine. As we begin this journey, we are reaching out to community leaders like you, not for financial support, but to keep you informed, celebrate local youth, and open the door for future collaboration. Your advocacy and connection to our community are deeply valued, and we would love for you to be part of this story in any way that feels meaningful to you.”

SYC hopes to create two to three theatrical productions each year for youth aged eight to 18 to take part in all roles involved in putting together a production from auditions to opening night.

Work on SYC’s first production Elf Jr. the Musical is already underway.

“Think you’ve got what it takes to be one of Santa’s helpers?” the SYC released in a statement July 27. “Or maybe you just really like smiling? Smiling’s our favorite too. Auditions for Elf Jr. the Musical are coming, and we want all the cotton-headed ninny muggins to try out. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or new to the stage, there’s a place for everyone in our magical North Pole.”

Auditions will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Richcraft Recreation Complex (4101 Innovation Dr.).

If you are interested in audition or being a part of the production SYC is asking you RSVP in advance and you can find more information, or do so here.
