DUNROBIN – Officially known as the Kanata Sailing Club (KSC), the club and its members will be celebrating 50 years at their Dunrobin-area club May 10 and they want you to come enjoy the party.

The KSC will host it’s Open House on Saturday, May 10 from noon to 4 p.m., and the public is invited to come on out, learn about the sailing club and its programs, enjoy a barbecue and maybe even head out on to the Ottawa River. And if you are really lucky, you might even win a one-year family membership.

“Open house is when we invite members of the public to come check out the club and see what we’re all about,” KSC Commodore Deb McPhedran told West Carleton Online last week (April 21). “Many of our members will be there as well as our training instructors, so come on down to the club and say hello.”

The KSC clubhouse and docks can be found on the Ottawa River at 1610 Sixth Line Rd., which is the entrance to Sheila McKee Memorial Park.

“This year is very special as the Kanata Sailing Club is marking its 50th anniversary,” McPhedran said. “And to celebrate we’re giving away one Adult/Youth Learn to Sail course plus one Family Membership.

That’s an approximate value of $1,106.

“The KSC is your community sailing club located on the Ottawa River in picturesque Dunrobin Shores, half an hour from downtown Ottawa,” McPhedran said. “We rock a wilderness camp flavour with glorious views to the Gatineau Hills on a navigable stretch extending farther upriver than you could reasonably sail in a day.”

Since 1975, this club has focused on training for all ages, recreational sailing and self-catered socializing.

“That’s right, no restaurant or bar,” McPhedran said. “Sailing is the name of the game, and we’ve been at it here for 50 years. Our training fleet consists of the rightly popular RS Quests and RS Fevas for adults, and SailQubes for kids.  Come get trained up, then take out a membership, and use our boats for free.”

You don’t have to have a sailboat to be a member of the KSC and there is no extra charge to use one from their incredible fleet.

The KSC has membership levels Social, Student, Single or Family.

“Social is all-access, though we might try to convince you to come out sailing too,” McPhedran said.

Registration for the KSC Learn-to-Sail program is open now.

“KSC is offering both adult Learn-to-Sail and our ever popular sailing day camps for juniors aged six to 15,” McPhedran said.

The KSC is also introducing a new program this season

“A Wet Feet introduction to sailing and the marine environment for juniors aged six to 10 is available this season,” McPhedran said. “Kids will pick up water safety lessons, and basic on-the-water balance and movement skills in our SailQube dinghies.”
