Waking up to a wet West Carleton
Special to WC Online
WEST CARLETON – Hot on the heels of our first freezing rain warning of the year is a regular, old rainfall warning, as weather prognosticators are calling for as much as 30 millimetres of rain over the next 24 hours or so.
“Rain, heavy at times is expected,” Environment Canada released in a rainfall warning today (Dec. 10). “The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.”
Environment Canada is calling for up to 30 millimetres of rain in the area.
“Beginning this evening until Wednesday (Dec. 11) evening,” Environment Canada said. “Rain, at times heavy, will start this evening from west to east. Rain may taper off on Wednesday morning, but it is expected to re-intensify again on Wednesday afternoon.”
Total rainfall amounts up to 30 mm are possible by Wednesday evening before rain changes to snow as temperatures drop below the freezing mark.
“Given the frozen ground, significant amounts of water due to snowmelt and rain could accumulate on roads and low-lying areas,” Environment Canada said. “Roads and sidewalks might become slippery with the temperatures dropping significantly overnight on Wednesday, and travel may be impacted. There is still some uncertainty in regards to which areas will receive the highest rainfall amounts. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”
Adding to the wild weather, there is also a fog advisory in effect for the area.
“Near zero visibility in fog is expected or occurring,” Environment Canada said. “Visibility may temporarily improve this afternoon before conditions worsen again this evening (Dec. 10). The fog is expected to lift Wednesday afternoon. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”
