Intensive care units filling up as COVID-19 cases continue to climb

OTTAWA – As COVID-19 cases continue to climb during the so-called second wave of the pandemic hits Ottawa and the province, local intensive care units are also seeing an increase in admissions.
Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is reporting local hospitalizations due to COVID-19 is up to 48, while 10 patients are now in need of intensive care as they battle the virus. These new numbers are being reported today (Oct. 13), as OPH says it’s confirmed another 116 cases of COVID-19 in the city.
Although the province has recorded 12 deaths due to the virus over the last two days, none of them have been in Ottawa. The city’s COVID-19 death toll remains at 297. OPH knows of 839 active cases of COVID-19 in the city, as it tracks three community outbreaks, making up for 140 cases.
There are 69 local institutions dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks as of Tuesday – 10 of those outbreaks are in schools.
Provincially, there were 746 new COVID-19 cases recorded Tuesday and 807 on Monday. Health Minister Christine Elliott says Ontario has conducted more than 67,700 tests in that time.
OPH has confirmed 5,662 cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa since March, with 4,411 of those resolved.
