West Carleton on severe thunderstorm watch
Special to WC Online
WEST CARLETON – What has been a turbulent month weather wise, West Carleton is under another severe thunderstorm watch.
August has seen a number of Environment Canada warnings and watches for thunderstorms and even a tornado watch last week.
The community was under a thunderstorm watch last night (Aug. 23) and is now under one this afternoon issued by Environment Canada at 12:48 p.m.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail,” Environment Canada staff released in a statement today (Aug. 24).
The watch is in effect this afternoon in to this evening. Environment Canada says “damaging wind gusts to 100 km/h and up to nickel sized hail,” is possible in portions of eastern Ontario including Ottawa, Cornwall, Brockville and Smiths Falls.
“Large hail can damage property and cause injury,” Environment Canada said. “Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.”
