1st Carp Scouts offering sweet deal
By Jake Davies - West Carleton Online
CARP – Last Saturday (March 28) the 1st Carp Scouts were canvassing the Village of Carp, hitting every single door in the village, offering the freshest maple syrup on the market at the most competitive price in the Ottawa Valley.
With the smells of spring in the air, its time for the 1st Carp Scouts biggest fundraiser of the year. This year, the scouts partnered with Temple’s Sugar Bush owner Andrew Mackey in McDonalds Corners, ON, once again to deliver to you one of the sweetest treats known to Ontarians in spring.
And to make it even sweeter, the 1st Carp Scouts are keeping their prices the same as last year with your choice of amber or dark syrup in 500 millilitre bottles for $14 or one litre for $23. This year you can also get five maple candes for $10.
West Carleton Online dropped by the Huntley Community Centre Saturday morning where Venturer Maverick Steadman was getting ready to cook pancakes for the rest of the 19 1st Carp Scouts that were doing door-to-door sales that chilly day.
“We’re normally used to doing this in 5-degree Celsius weather,” Scout leader Cameron Steadman told West Carleton Online.
But scouts are nothing if not adaptable. Scout leader Dan Hewitt is thrilled to be partnered with Temple’s again.
“He has been providing high quality syrup for our fundraiser,” Hewitt said. “Temple’s is always present at local events including Winterlude on the canal. They are well known for all their maple products. Especially their taffy and maple sugar.”
Temple’s Sugar Bush has 10,000 taps and is located on 300 acres of maple bush. The 1st Carp Scouts are hoping to go back-to-back with successful years.
“Last year we sold close to 800 bottles, and we hope to do the same this year,” Hewitt said.
Along with canvassing, the scouts have a few great volunteers helping out.
“We have our syrup available at Ottawa Valley Grain Products (405 Donald B. Munro Dr.) with owner Kevin Stuart, a great supporter of scouts in Carp,” Hewitt said. “This year we also have our syrup available to purchase at Giacinto’s Barbershop (433A Donald B. Munro Dr.) with help from Andy Papadopoli and at the Ridge Rock Brewing Company (421 Donald B. Munro Dr.) from general manager Ashley Vajda. Thank you to all who are making this year’s fundraiser a large success. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go back in to the Scouts program, that will help with purchasing gear and helping send youth to camps and Scouting events in our community.”
