CARP – With an outdoor rink in every West Carleton community and the Rideau Canal not too far away, learning to skate is a must in the Ottawa Valley and the West Carleton Skating Club has got you.

“The West Carleton Skating Club is getting ready to head back to the rink for our 2026–2027 season, and registration is still open,” WCSC volunteer Beth Stanistreet released in a statement Sept. 24. “If you’ve been thinking about skating for your child this year, now is a great time to have a look at our programs. We offer CanSkate for those learning the basics, PowerSkate for hockey and ringette players, STARSkate for figure skaters, and Adult Learn to Skate as well.”

The WCSC is more than 35 years old, running its programs out of the indoor arena (3882 Carp Rd.) in Carp.

“We’re a small, community-based club skating at the W. Erskine Johnston Arena in Carp, and we’d love to see some new faces join the many familiar ones returning this year,” Stanistreet said. “Our programs begin in October and some sessions are starting to fill. We understand the financial constraints families are facing so we do offer a five per cent family/multi-program registration discount which is available until Sept. 30.”

StarSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating.

CanSkate is a national certified program offered only through sanctioned SkateCanada clubs.  It is a basic 6-level, learn-to-skate program that serves as an excellent introduction to all ice sports including figure skating and hockey.

It’s never too late to learn to skate! The WCSC’s Adult Learn to Skate program, delivered through Skate Canada’s nationally recognized CanSkate curriculum, is designed for beginners as well as those looking to refresh their skating skills.

PowerSkate is an action-packed, high energy instructional power skating program geared to hockey and ringette skaters that focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. Skills, techniques and conditioning drills are taught in a progressive format that emphasizes how the skills apply to game situations.

“And if you know a family in the community who has been thinking about getting their kiddos on the ice, please feel free to share this with them,” Stanistreet said. “Hope to see you at the rink.”
