Police briefs: Fatal Diamondview crash, Kinburn resident dies in McNab-Braeside, High risk offender moves to Ottawa

CARP – One person is dead and one person has serious injuries following a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Diamondview and March roads.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) Fatal Collision Investigations Unit is seeking witnesses to a fatal collision that occurred on Friday, Aug. 21.

 “At approximately 5:42 p.m., officers were called to March Road at Diamondview Road in response to a collision involving three vehicles,” the OPS released in a statement yesterday (Aug. 21) evening. “Multiple injuries were reported as a result of the collision, with one 31-year-old female pronounced deceased at the scene and a 37-year-old female airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.”

Investigators would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage of this incident and has not yet spoken to police.

High-risk offender moves from Smiths Falls to Ottawa

DOWNTOWN – Aaron Gilpin, 35, has recently relocated from Smiths Falls to Ottawa and is residing in the downtown area.

“Gilpin has been deemed a high-risk violent sexual offender,” the OPS released in a statement yesterday (Aug. 21). « Gilpin has a criminal history that includes a sexual offence involving a child, assaults, weapons offences, disarming a police officer, break and enters and thefts.”

Gilpin is described as: 

• White male
• 35 years old
• Approximately 6’0”
• Medium build
• Hazel eyes

“The OPS is notifying the public because the High-Risk Offender Management Unit believes Gilpin poses a significant risk to public safety based on his history of violent and sexual offending,” the OPS said.

Anyone who observes Gilpin involved in criminal activity should not approach him and should contact the OPS High-Risk Offender Management Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 4395, or 9-1-1 in case of an emergency. This public safety notification is being issued under Ontario Regulation 412/23 under the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019, which permits the disclosure of personal information where there are reasonable grounds to believe an individual poses a significant risk of harm to another person or property and that disclosure would reduce that risk.

Drug dealer has replica guns in Renfrew

RENFREW – Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Region Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) have laid charges following a drug trafficking investigation in Renfrew.

“On Aug. 20, as a result of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation, members of the East Region CSCU executed a search warrant at a residence in Renfrew,” OPP Sgt. Erin Cranton released in a statement yesterday (Aug. 21). “As a result of the search, officers seized approximately 14 grams of suspected cocaine and three replica firearms.”

Christopher Reid, 39 of Renfrew, was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine
• Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000
• Failure to comply with release order – two counts

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 21.

Kinburn resident perishes in motorcycle collision

McNAB-BRAESIDE – Members of the Renfrew Detachment of the OPP are investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle.

“On Thursday, Aug. 20, shortly before 7:30 p.m., Renfrew OPP officers, along with County of Renfrew Paramedic Service and local fire services, responded to a report of a motorcycle collision on Creek Side Road near Kippen Road,” OPP Sgt. Erin Cranton released in a statement yesterday (Aug. 21). “Emergency responders located a motorcycle in the ditch. The operator was found at the scene and was pronounced deceased.”

The deceased has been identified as a 38-year-old resident of Kinburn.

Members of the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

ROPE Squad apprehends Kingsley

OTTAWA – The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad would like to advise the public that a federal offender who went unlawfully at large on Aug. 10, has been apprehended in Ottawa.

“Mathieu Kingsley was located and arrested by the ROPE Squad,” OPP detective Sgt. Morley McGuire released in a statement Aug. 20.

Kingsley is serving a five-year sentence for;

• Break, Enter and Commit
• Theft over $5,000
• Fail to Comply with Probation
• Theft Under $5,000
• Fraud Under $5,000

“The Provincial ROPE Squad would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance in this investigation,” McGuire said.

OPS partner with business district to halt shoplifting

DOWNTOWN – Between July 12 and Aug. 18, officers with the OPS Central District Neighbourhood Resource Team (NRT) conducted a series of targeted operations in response to retail theft concerns at a Rideau Street business.

“Working with the business’s loss prevention personnel, NRT officers conducted targeted operations at various times throughout the project, increasing visibility and providing operational support to deter theft-related activity and enhance public safety in the area,” the OPS released in a statement Thursday (Aug. 20).

As a result of the initiative:

• 17 individuals were arrested
• 17 criminal charges were laid
• One warrant was executed
• Seven Provincial Offence Notices were issued

“This initiative reflects the Ops’ commitment to proactive problem-solving, crime prevention, and community safety through strong partnerships with local businesses and stakeholders,” the OPS said. “Officers will continue to engage with retailers and community partners to address issues affecting residents, visitors, and businesses in the downtown core.”

Businesses are encouraged to continue reporting theft-related incidents and suspicious activity to police.
