Local author seeking teens to review AI coding book
Special to WC Online
WEST CARLETON – Local author and retired technology educator Richard Longworth is inviting young people between the ages of 14 and 18 to help review his forthcoming book, Code for a Better Tomorrow: AI and Human Skills for the Next Generation.
The book introduces Python programming in a clear, supportive way for young learners. Along with fundamental coding skills, it encourages readers to consider ethics; emotional intelligence; responsible uses of artificial intelligence; and most important, the human consequences of the technology they create.
“I want young people to see coding as more than a technical skill,” Longworth said. “It can also be a way to solve meaningful problems, help others and contribute to a better future.”
Longworth taught technology, systems engineering and mathematics courses at Capilano University and College for 27 years. His new book draws upon that teaching experience while introducing an AI-assisted, Socratic learning approach designed for today’s generation of students.
Reviewers do not need previous programming experience. In fact, feedback is especially welcome from complete beginners, although students who already have some coding experiences are also encouraged to participate.
Selected reviewers will be asked to read sample sections, try several beginner exercises from 2 chapters, and complete a short questionnaire. The time allotted, for the review, should not exceed a couple of hours.
The purpose is not to test the students, it is to critique the book, Longworth reports.
“Honest criticism, questions and suggestions are welcomed,” he said.
Participation by anyone under the age of 18 will require the consent of a parent or guardian. Reviewers’ personal information will remain private, and no student’s name or comments will be published without prior permission.
Young people interested in participating, or parents and guardians wishing to learn more, are invited to contact Richard Longworth by email at richardlongworth@rogers.com
Kindly respond by Sept. 18,” Longworth said. “Thank you for your support and consideration.”
