Hump day Canada Day in West Carleton

WEST CARLETON – It may be a mid-week Canada Day (July 1) this year, but there will still be plenty to do in West Carleton with a couple of long-running classic Canada Day events and the return of another not seen in the community since before COVID-19.
Put on your red, paint your face, why not? Get out there and have some fun on Canada’s 159th birthday.
Returning after six years away, the Corkery Community Association (CCA) Canada Day Picnic returns to its brand-spanking new Corkery Community Centre for the first time since 2019.
“It’s been a long Covid-reno, but our premier event is back,” the CCA released in a statement.
Drop by the Corkery Community Centre (3447 Old Almonte Rd.) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be live music and a deejay, activities and family fun and food will be available.
The world-famous West Carleton Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 616 (377 Allbirch Rd.), Canada Day Pig Roast is back, and the action gets started around 3 p.m. The cooking of the pig starts much earlier than that. The Gear Jammerz hit the stage at 3 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5 p.m. The fun goes much later than that. The Canada Day Pig Roast is $20 and everyone is welcome.
Just down the road at the Dunrobin Community Centre (1151 Thomas A. Dolan Pkwy.), the Dunrobin Community Association (DCA) will be hosting their annual great big Canada Day celebration which, darn tootin’, includes fireworks.
“Canada Day is almost here,” the DCA released in a statement today (June 18). “Join us for an unforgettable day of celebration, great food, cold drinks, and live entertainment.”
It is expected dignitaries will attend the cake cutting including Coun. Clarke Kelly. MP Bruce Fanjoy and MPP Karen McCrimmon have also attended in the past. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. and the cake cutting will happen shortly after 5 p.m.
There will be live music by the Silverson Band featuring Bill Wilson and Kevin Davis. Food and beverages available from The Rocking Dock and The Covered Bridge Brewing Company Inc.
“Once the sun says goodnight, the fireworks will light up the sky,” the DCA said. “Bring your family, friends, and your Canadian spirit — we can’t wait to celebrate with you.”
Not really a public event but keep your heads up if you are driving down Carp Road near Kinburn Side Road. Another long-running tradition will be taking place as Ken Borg and his friends and family will be painting their giant Canada flag on the road as they have done for many, many years.
